For the children at Robin's Nest Children's Home, safety is never taken for granted. This home serves as a place of refuge for vulnerable children, offering care and stability each day. After the hurricane, that stability was shaken, leaving daily life uncertain and placing both children and caregivers in urgent need of support.

The hurricane tore away large sections of the roof, leaving the home exposed to the elements, creating a space of vulnerability overnight.

In the midst of this, a response began to take shape- The Woodbury Lutheran Church.

Planning the Journey to Rebuild

The effort to repair Robin's Nest began long before the first nail was hammered. Woodbury Lutheran Church worked closely with Jamaica Link Ministries and its partners to assess the damage and identify the most urgent needs. This preplanning phase was crucial to ensure the team brought the right tools, materials, and skills for the job.

The collaboration involved:

  • Inspecting the damage remotely and through local contacts

  • Listing necessary supplies such as plywood, decking, nails, and roofing materials

  • Organizing transportation for tools and volunteers

  • Scheduling the trip to maximize time on site

This careful preparation allowed the team to arrive ready to work efficiently and effectively.

The Repair Work at Robin's Nest

Once on site, the volunteers faced the challenge of repairing a roof that had been severely damaged by the hurricane’s strong winds. Sections of the roof decking and plywood had been completely blown off, leaving the interior exposed.

The work included:

  • Stripping off the old, damaged decking and plywood

  • Measuring and cutting new plywood to fit the roof structure

  • Installing the new decking securely to withstand future storms

  • Ensuring the roof was watertight and safe for the children

The team worked long hours under the tropical sun, driven by the knowledge that their efforts would provide shelter and security for the children who call Robin's Nest home.

The Impact of Community Support

The rebuilding of Robin's Nest Children's Home is a powerful example of how support from our global community can make a real difference in any situation but especially after a disaster. The partnership between Woodbury Lutheran Church, Jamaica Link Ministries, and local community partners shows the strength of working together toward a common goal.

For the children of Robin’s Nest, the restored roof brings renewed safety and stability. It allows daily life to continue with greater confidence and peace of mind.

For those who served, it is a reminder that their time and effort have a direct and lasting impact.

Moving Forward with Resilience

The success of this project highlights the importance of preparation, teamwork, and hands-on support in disaster recovery. While Hurricane Melissa caused significant damage, the response from caring groups like Woodbury Lutheran Church has helped Robin's Nest recover and continue its mission.
